Outline;- Sujana Kerton was a young artist that drew sketches for an Indonesian independent newspaper during the war of independence from the Dutch. Much of his work from this period was captured and burnt. He recorded the Dutch handing over power to the Indonesians in sketches – perhaps the only pictorial recoding of such an event. His drawing style was very modern, being impressionist quick sketches that have an incredible means of conveying emotion. After the war of independence he was offered a scholarship in the USA, and ended up living there for 25 years. On his return to Indonesia he settled just outside Bandung, and was immediately assimilated back into Indonesia’s top artistic cliché.
Many early sketches and latter photos & pictures.
A lovely and enriching read.
