My first choice is that Clark Kent would make the ideal new Indonesian Minister of Mines and Energy. Clark was bought up on a country farm where basic morals and ethics underlie the very fiber of the man that is incorruptible. As a reporter Clark is able to walk amongst the people on the crowded street and as Superman can leap tall buildings of the conglomerates to see the bigger picture. Clark sees the real world through glasses and as Superman uses his X-ray vision to see through the corruption, malpractices and vested interests. Clark the reporter follows the company rules, but as Superman he bends the bars of red tape to release the people from the prison of bureaucracy. In daily life Clark is a meek polite man willing to listen to the issues of the day, but as Superman his bionic hearing can detect the cries of distress of the miner in the most remote location. Clark is a softly spoken man offering words of wisdom to his friends, but as Superman can blow the turbines of PLN to produce green energy along with supporting research and technology. Clark has a well tailored suit, but underneath Superman needs the lead shield of the people’s good will to protect him from the kryptonite of Lex Luthor and his band of NGO’s, Forestry, misguided think-tank elite and others who would harm him and destroy the mining industry.
It will take a Superman to adopt the much appreciated Jokowi style of management to drop in unannounced to the 33 Provincial Mines Department offices, along with a number of the 430 District mines department offices plus some of the 40 COW’s and 5,000 or so IUPs for minerals & coal, plus many oil and gas sites, geothermal and alternative energy sites plus the countless PLN sites. Clark Kent will have to deal with the arrival of the Asia Free Trade pact, the broadening of the EITI transparency into the Provinces with a wider scope, bureaucratic reform, the implementation of the 2009 mineral & coal IUP issuance of tenements through the bidding process plus development of human resources etc. Clark will need the assistance of his best associates of Pulitzer winning Louise Lane and Jimmy Olsen to deal with the ongoing issues of constitutional court challenges to the raw ore export ban, international court cases of Churchill & Newmont, the finalization of the renegotiation of the COW contracts and the restructuring of MIGAS etc. Again, a Superman effort will be required to resolve the fuel subsidy issue and to bring on oil and gas development quickly. Many of Indonesia’s power plants will begin to arrive at their use-by date, where maintenance and the building of new plants will require people’s faith in Superman’s integrity to resolve land compensation and budget issues. Coordinating with other ministries and the parliament will take Clark’s quiet persuasiveness and integrity.
However Clark Kent is not Indonesian, so perhaps Joko Widodo may seek out Gatotkaca, to be assisted by the Punakawan team.
