On Thursday 27 August I attended (Jakarta) the afternoon session of the MGEI association seminar to discuss the “Indonesian Mining; Optimism in a Nutshell”. It was well attended by about 30 geologists with a good cross section of experience in the industry. Many of those attending contributed to the discussion that touched upon a wide range of topics. The topics typically referred to the coal and gold industries with various views on how the government can contribute to the further development of the exploration industry. There was a strong emphasis on data compilation and ethics. Some of the more speculative discussion looked at the economic rational of coal royalty verses fuel subsidies.

One of my personal take-away’s from this meeting is that the Government will always be a difficult body to approach with concepts for a healthier exploration industry, thus every effort should be undertaken to raise the profile of exploration in the many forms of public media.
