Islam and Democracy – Fear of the modern world. (book review)

Title :-Islam and Democracy – Fear of the modern world.

By :- Fatima Mernissi

Published :- Perseus Books (1992) Paperback (170 pages)

Outline;- The book is written post the Gulf War, and this seems to have changed the authors (born in Morocco) mid eastern outlook on the west. She looks at various simplified components of Islam and explains their religious and social values in terms of mid eastern history and culture. This is a good intellectual part of the book. She also tends to turn upon the west’s philosophy and outlook as tending to be unsophisticated, evil and contrived by western politicians for their elevation of their own power based on fear of others. This part seems to be bitter.

Her earlier books were much better.
