This year’s Indonesian Mining exhibition was quite different from the past years in that the China stands completely dominated the two halls. The Koreans and Germans had modest stands, while the normally strong Australian stands were almost invisible. The China stands seemed strongly focused on mining and mineral processing equipment, and there were several stands offering similar products, from drill bits, digging teeth, conveyors, mineral process systems and such. The Germans seemed to be offering a similar range of products, but clearly at the high tech end with special coatings and such. The stand out Australian products seemed to be the super smart computer systems linked to mining equipment for more effective / efficient mining. Exploration and environment / CSR stands were virtually absent, though I did see the local Jakindo exploration equipment provider. Indeed Indonesian miners, Indonesian SOE’s and Indonesian Universities were conspicuous by their absence, perhaps a reflection of the hard times. An interesting new stand was for Singapore based courses on finance fundamentals for mining. The Indonesian government and some local magazine producers (including Petromindo’s Coal Asia) had basic stands. The Governments push towards smelters did not seem well reflected in this exhibition. There was plenty to see, and the show girls helped make the tour pleasant.

These general observations seem to reflect the state of the exploration and mining industry. Exploration is dead while the mining industry is strongly focused on cost cutting. That China is simply looking to Indonesia to become a major market of industrial mining products. The other countries better understand the Indonesian mining industry and are more selective in providing goods and services that focus on cost savings through improved performance. That Indonesia is lost in cost cutting as reflected in their not turning up at all.
